What is the Soccer Ashes?

The upcoming matches between New Zealand and Australian national football teams mark the return of the Soccer Ashes, last contested in 2023 when the Socceroos secured a 2-0 victory over the All Whites in London, retaining the title. The historic competition, revived in 2023 after a 69-year hiatus since 1954, was reignited following the rediscovery of the long-lost trophy.

The Soccer Ashes trophy holds the ashes of cigars smoked by Australian captain Alex Gibb and New Zealand captain George Campbell after their inaugural match in Australia in June 1923. Crafted by New Zealandโ€™s Harry Mayer in 1923, the trophy combines rewarewa and Australian maple, encased in a silver-plated razor case carried by Queensland Football Association Secretary Private William Fisher during the 1915 Gallipoli landing. This cherished artifact embodies the Anzac Spirit, symbolizing the deep trans-Tasman sporting connection and rivalry.
