Last weekend we were at Shepherds Park for the Delivereasy Chatham Cup game between Birkenhead United AFC and Waiheke United AFC in the Cup elimination round of 16. What a match it was! Birkenhead United dominated the entire game being 3-0 up at half time and then finally winning 7-0. Having said that, Waiheke still played well though couldn’t break through the strong Birko defence.

A special shout-out to the Waiheke United supporters known as La Banda Del Pipazo who were singing from BEFORE the game had even started and until well after the final whistle had blown. Despite being down the entire game and even after receiving 7 goals against them, their energy did not wane. Constant rhythm, constant singing, constant energy. I even noticed local Birko supporters involuntarily moving their bodies to the contagious rhythm. Of course, Ange never needs an invitation to dance either (yes, she got caught in the video). I would rate La Banda Del Pipazo as the best football supporters in New Zealand.
