The last time Auckland FC and Newcastle Jets met at Go Media Stadium was in November 2024. You may remember it because of the golazo scored by Neyder Moreno but maybe also because of the game with the heavy rain. Everyone in the stands and on the pitch got soaked!
This time around there was even more rain, torrential rain in the second half in which most people thought the game was going to be called off. The ball wouldn’t bounce, players would kick the ball then go to chase after it BUT the ball didn’t advance so both teams would have to backtrack. Even Michael Woud almost screwed things up when he went to roll the ball ahead and it just stuck to the ground near him … close to a Jets player. The second half was more a swimming contest than a football match and as you can see in the photo above, even orcas could be seen jumping out of the waterlogged pitch.
The final score of a 1-2 win by the visiting Jets was a result nobody expected. Auckland were near the top of the table (only one point behind Sydney FC) and Newcastle Jets were sitting at the bottom, dead last. It didn’t help that Jesse Randall had the aim of a stormtrooper and that we were still missing some players (Sakai, May and Rogerson).
