Today it was officially confirmed that Guillermo May has departed Auckland FC after being with the club from the start of its two-year existence.
The 28-year-old Uruguayan striker, who arrived as one of the expansion club’s marquee inaugural visa signings in September 2024, leaves New Zealand as a fan favorite (Gimme, Gimme, Gimme Guillermo at Mount Smart …) and a clinical architect of the club’s rapid rise. As Auckand FC’s first ever MVP, we can firmly say that Guillermo really is an OG.
May leaves a lasting legacy on the pitch, departing as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer at the time of his exit:
| Appearances: | 58 total matches across two seasons |
| Goals Scored: | 16 goals |
| Assists: | 6 assists |
| 2024-25 Season | 9 goals, 1 assist (Club MVP & Golden Boot winner) |
| 2025-26 Season | 7 goals (6 in regular season, 1 in finals), 4 assists |

Inaugural Impact: May made his debut on 19 October 2024 against Brisbane Roar, picking up an assist in the club’s second-ever goal. He scored his first goal a month later in a 1–0 away victory against Macarthur FC.
Double-Digit Pioneer: On 6 December 2025, during a 3–1 New Zealand Derby win over the Wellington Phoenix, May became the first player in Auckland FC history to hit double figures in total goals.
Trophy Cabinet: He helped guide the “Black Knights” to a dream start in professional football, clinching the Premiership in their first season and following it up with the Championship title in the 2025–26 season.
Clutch Performer: In April 2026, May came off the bench to score an 90th-minute point-saving double against Sydney FC to protect Auckland’s league positioning. He also scored the regular-time goal in the dramatic 2026 Elimination Final against Melbourne City before converting his penalty in the shootout.
Injury Setback: He tragically missed the 2026 Grand Final victory after tearing his syndesmosis (ankle ligaments) during a 1–1 semi-final draw against Adelaide United
For now, Guillermo is returning to Uruguay to focus on his injury rehab surrounded by family while evaluating his next career move.
